Showing Off Your Favorite Things

Let the Karen Brown Team do the hard work for you:

There are almost as many reasons why people have collections as there are things to collect. Some people save beloved items from their past, things that give happy memories of childhood. Rarer pieces are sought
after as an investment, in the hopes their value will increase over time. Other collections happen by chance, after years of garage-sale hunting and gathering things that strike one’s fancy.Regardless of origin, the one thing that all collections have in common is that they give their owner a sense of pleasure and satisfaction every time they are viewed. Creating a display to showcase your beloved assortment of favorites allows you to share your passion with others, keeps your more fragile collectibles at a safe distance from harm, and best of all, gives them the spotlight they deserve.

POTTERY PARADE

A feast for the eyes, colorful array of ceramic tableware is best showcased with a minimum of pomp and grandeur. The split shelving is simple yet elegant, providing a sturdy backdrop for the curvy pitchers and covered bowls. A weathered pillar draws attention to the collection, adding interest and visually balancing the shelves’ horizontal lines.

SQUARED AWAY

Casual groupings of used everyday items, are nice to be viewed individually – an old teakettle, embroidered table linens, portable radio and tattered how-to-books- hardly seem worthy of showcase. Displayed together, however, a common thread of traditional form and function emerges, instantly evoking memories of grandma’s homespun kitchen.

PATTER PIZZAZZ

The inspired mix of styles in a cozy kitchen could be united through a harmonious palette of blue and white. Unusual patterns can be displayed to full effect on interesting vases that serve double duty by providing practical storage for cooking tools.

BEACHY KEEN

Memories of fun in the sun will wash over all who use your bathroom sink, add a nostalgic collection of vintage beach-scene postcards, used as a clever extension to a traditional backsplash. Several coats of varnish should be applied to the postcards before hanging to ensure long term water resistance and durability.

ARTFUL EXPRESSIONS

An artist’s flair for the dramatic takes the center stage, with an eclectic arrangement of frames showcasing an impressive inventory of small-scale canvases. Both the artwork and the frames may vary in style, color and composition, creating an appealing display that commands attention and invites closer inspection.

Pay attention to scale. Smaller items look best displayed in a group; larger pieces are best presented on their own. Don’t be locked into symmetrical arrangements. Try an unexpected grouping of items clustered clustered together on one side of a shelf or tabletop. Use your collection to enhance other items in the room. When displaying your blue-and-white throw pillows, or a blue runner on the mantel. Mix it up. Who says you can’t showcase your heirloom antique frames near that kitschy lava lamp? An eclectic mix of uncommon items in contrasting colors and textures creates an immediate focal point.

The items you choose to collect are often a reflection of your true personality. So you just enjoy your time mixing and matching in displaying them.
